RNAway’s delivery platform can fit any RNA-based solution to target any pathogen from inside the plant, to boost plants’ defensive pathways and hinder infections in various crops.
As a proof of concept, RNAway independently developed the first treatments against three devastating viruses, Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV), Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV) and Grapevine Leafroll associated Virus 3 (GLRaV-3) causing Grapevine Leafroll Disease (GLD).
By spraying RNAway-based treatment against ToBRFV on tomato plants, disease symptoms and viral titer were reduced and plant yield, quality, and quantity were not affected.
The virus reduces plant biomass and vigor, deforms the fruits and reduces yield by 25% as well as damages the marketability of the fruit.
Today there are no effective actions against this highly persistent virus other than destruction of plants and quarantine of the affected area for a minimum of 2 years.
By irrigating the crops with RNAway-based treatment against CGMMV, disease symptoms and viral titer were reduced and plant yield was not affected.
By spraying RNAway-based treatment on the grapevines, disease symptoms and viral titer were eliminated, fruit quality was not damaged, and yield was not affected. With easy integration into vineyard operations, yearly applications of the RNAway treatment prove to be an effective method in mitigating the devasting effect of GLD for already infected vineyards.
RNA molecules initiate a biological process which causes a reduction in the expression of specific genes in the plant, without modifying the plant genome.
This change allows the alteration and improvement of the plant characteristics and achieves various benefits:
