Plant Treatment for Pathogens in Crops

RNAway’s delivery platform can fit any RNA-based solution to target any pathogen from inside the plant, to boost plants’ defensive pathways and hinder infections in various crops.

As a proof of concept, RNAway independently developed the first treatments against three devastating viruses, Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV), Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV) and Grapevine Leafroll associated Virus 3 (GLRaV-3) causing Grapevine Leafroll Disease (GLD).

Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) Treatment
Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (Genus: Tobamovirus) causes major concern and damage for growers as it reduces plant vigor, results in significant yield losses, and makes the fruits unmarketable. Today there are no effective solutions against the virus.
By spraying RNAway-based treatment against ToBRFV on tomato plants, disease symptoms and viral titer were reduced and plant yield, quality, and quantity were not affected.

Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV) Treatment
Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) (Genus: Tobamovirus) is a destructive pathogenic virus present worldwide.
The virus reduces plant biomass and vigor, deforms the fruits and reduces yield by 25% as well as damages the marketability of the fruit.
Today there are no effective actions against this highly persistent virus other than destruction of plants and quarantine of the affected area for a minimum of 2 years.
By irrigating the crops with RNAway-based treatment against CGMMV, disease symptoms and viral titer were reduced and plant yield was not affected.

Grapevine Leafroll (GLD) Treatment
GLD is one of the most widespread and economically damaging viral diseases in grapevines worldwide. Grapevines infected with the virus have reduced berry quality and lower yields, delayed or uneven ripening, and produce lower quality grapes and wine. Infection can also harm the quality of wood for propagation, and modern nursery providers will not deal with infected materials due to strict quarantine regulations. Today there are no effective actions against the virus and growers must uproot the infected vines.
By spraying RNAway-based treatment on the grapevines, disease symptoms and viral titer were eliminated, fruit quality was not damaged, and yield was not affected. With easy integration into vineyard operations, yearly applications of the RNAway treatment prove to be an effective method in mitigating the devasting effect of GLD for already infected vineyards.

Targeting Agronomic Genes Without Genetic Modification

RNA molecules initiate a biological process which causes a reduction in the expression of specific genes in the plant, without modifying the plant genome.

This change allows the alteration and improvement of the plant characteristics and achieves various benefits:

Increase in the quantity of the yield
Increase in the quality of the yield
Improvements in the plant's health
Improvements or changes in plant characteristics according to grower needs
Resistance to extreme environmental conditions
By targeting the expression of naturally occurring plant genes, farmers can avoid planting genetically modified crops which are subject to strict regulations and contractual obligations.
RNAWay is currently exploring commercially relevant gene targets which could assist in increasing plant environmental resilience, increasing yield, and influence other agronomic traits of interest. Contact our team to discuss your specific application
